With Labor Day around the corner, the vacation-filled days of summer will be over soon. And it’s time to return to the monthly book club meetings that chances are have been put on hiatus in honor of summer vacation.
There are so many new books out there but for a change of pace, why not do a theme such as “a male POV.” And just for fun, why not do two books from two different genres – mystery/thriller and romance.
If you’re thinking that this is an unconventional combo, please hear me out. There is a logic in this madness.
The first recommended book with a male POV is “Lies” by T. M. Logan. Classified under the genre Mystery & Thrillers, it has been described by New York Times bestselling author Lee Child as “Assured, compelling, and hypnotically readable—with a twist at the end I guarantee you won’t see coming.”
I agree! When I first got hold of this book, I was hooked in the first chapter. I could not turn the pages fast enough. There were a few holes in the logic, but they were not significant enough to deter me from enjoying the book.
“Lies” opened with Joe Lynch, a happily married man, a devoted father, and a respected teacher living in a well-to-do London suburb driving home with his son when he saw his wife enter a hotel parking garage.
That was the pivotal moment when Joe’s “perfect and very ordinary life” tilted on its axis. After witnessing his wife having a heated argument with her best friend’s husband, Joe got into an altercation with the other man where he left him for dead, bleeding and unconscious.
Feeling guilty, Joe went back to the scene of the crime in a manner of speaking but found the man missing, all traces him, including his car was gone.
What followed was a rollercoaster ride where Joe did not know whether he was coming or going, what was real and what was not, what was the truth and what was the lie.
There is only one constant he can rely on – his son William is real, and Joe needs to protect him. But what if it costs him his life? Who will take care of William?
Now, for the second book – “Last Chance Rodeo” (A Blackfeet Nation Novel) by Kari Lynn Dell. It was originally published in February of 2015 under the title “The Long Road Home,” and was re-released under this new title on July 30, 2019.
“Last Chance Rodeo” follows rodeo roping champ David Parsons wherein in one thoughtless moment, he lost Muddy, his irreplaceable horse and his rodeo career. For four long years, David was just surviving but thanks to a social media post, he’s finally tracked his horse to the Blackfeet Reservation.
But reclaiming his horse was not as easy as he thought. First, David had to deal for a woman that he found very attractive. Never mind that she was the enemy. His heart had a different opinion.
Second, his Muddy’s “new owner” Kylan was a kid who had gotten more raw deals in life than average. Muddy might be his only salvation and path to a normal life.
Third, David is dealing with tribal law, which he did not understand nor have any working knowledge. Though the Elders are trustworthy, it was hard for David to deal with something he did not understand. Any misstep can cost him his horse!
“Last Chance Rodeo” is classified under “Romance” but it is more than just a love story. Kylan’s story will tug at your heartstrings.
Both “Lies” and “Last Chance Rodeo” were written from a man’s POV. They might come from different genres, but they have a common theme – protect the child.
