Audiobook Review: Black Sheep, White Knight (Dirty Mafia Duet) by Meghan March

dirty mafia duetIf you love The Sopranos, then the Dirty Mafia Duet (Black Sheep and White Knight) is for you. And since this is a duet, it is in two parts, meaning two books.

As already mentioned in the blurb for the book, this is the story of the infamous Casso crime family. A little hint – if you follow Meghan March, then you already know that Cannon Freeman is one of Dominic Casso’s illegitimate children. Though all four were born out of wedlock, for some reason, Cannon was the unacknowledged one.

And it’s not because Dominic Casso had doubts about his parentage. Cannon can be Dom’s mini me, his features softened only by his mother’s beauty. Cannon is as accomplished as his siblings. He went to an Ivy League school, even has an MBA. He even runs the legitimate end of the Casso business empire.

Now, here is the clincher. All of Cannon’s siblings are living successful lives outside the “family” and Dom seemed to have no problems with that. But, if Cannon showed any signs of trying to be independent, Dom always threw him a bone or a roadblock so that Cannon would stay. Talk about being a dysfunctional family!

Speaking of dysfunctional families, Drew Carson also came from one. With a very famous and respected journalist as a father, Drew grew up with a self-centered stepmother. While her father showed his love for her all the time, Drew did not experience any maternal love from her father’s wife.

Not surprisingly, with the death of her father, Drew and her stepmother did not grow any closer, but they refuse to break their bonds either. Needless to say, there was no love loss between them. Dysfunctional much?

Still, that was how Drew and Cannon’s paths cross. Mourning the death of her father, Drew turned to the only thing she knew – being a very good investigative journalist. Suspicious that there was foul play on her father’s death and the Casso family on top of the list of her suspects, Drew applied for a cocktail waitress job at Upper Ten, one of Dominic Casso’s legitimate business ventures.

Drew thought she had hit the jackpot being hired. She did not foresee one thing though – Cannon Freeman was a very attractive man and he was hitting all her buttons! And the feelings were mutual. But, can their love survive under false pretenses and in the middle of the intrigues inside a mob family?

Cannon Freeman and Drew Carson are not your normal romantic heroes. They cannot even be considered anti-heroes. They are not the boy or girl next door type either. Still, they have so many traits that are so relatable, you cannot help but fall in love with them.

Cannon is the quintessential New Yorker. Born and raised in New York City and with an Ivy League school education, he is meant to live in Fifth Avenue or the Upper East Side. But he is a mobster’s son with a childhood spent in Brooklyn and Hell’s Kitchen.

Used to a low-key existence, Cannon does not grace the pages of the tabloids – Page Six or otherwise. But don’t doubt his reach or his strengths. He is a force to be reckoned with on his own right. After all, he learned from the best – Dominic Casso, his father.

Drew is no slouch either. Her assignments had taken her to war zones and dangerous places all over the world. Together with Cannon, they can survive a mob purge if it came to that.

A thriller wrapped in a romantic theme, the depth of Black Sheep and White Knight will surprise you. Meghan March has more than done justice to the characters. She excelled!

Having read the stories of Cannon’s other siblings (I will not give the titles here because it might be a spoiler to some), Cannon and Drew surpassed the others in characterization. Yes, I did love the stories of the other Casso children, but this one takes them to an entirely new level!

Additionally, Sebastian York and Andi Arndt are perfect as Cannon and Drew. I know that I keep singing them praises whenever I listen to a book they narrated. But, I will not have it any other way. After all, how can you find any flaws in perfection?

Both Black Sheep and White Knight Rated M for Mature due to the theme, hints of violence and sexual content. Another note, you have to read the books one after the other. They are a mated pair.
