LOS ANGELES, May 26, 2013/ — Launching this summer at UNIQLO stores and online, Paint & Cloth and UNIQLO collaborated to create an apparel line pays tribute to the history of the American t-shirt.

This capsule collection plays on the strength of the two brands. While UNIQLY extends its philosophy of creating stylish apparel that transcends age, gender, occupation, ethnicity, and all other ways that define people, Paint & Cloth on the other hand finds inspiration in history, specifically the history of American t-shirt.

The spring 2013 collection is inspired by the four pillars of American pop culture: Rock & Roll, East Coast Prep, Surf, and Military.

Rock & Roll inspires the bright graphic prints, East Coast Prep is conveyed through traditional anchors and nautical design, Military influence is displayed with bold colored arrows and witty slogans, and palm trees and sailboats in muted hues are reminiscent of the classic American Surf with 14 styles of casual cotton maxi dresses priced at $12.90 each.

Originally created to wear underneath military uniforms, the t-shirt skyrocketed to pop culture status when rebel icons Marlon Brando, James Dean, and Jane Birkin sported them as outerwear.

During the Vietnam War, protesters used the t-shirt as a canvas to paint their strong and heated beliefs about the war.

By the 1960’s, the t-shirt had become a symbol of rebellion and individual thinking. Paying homage to this icon of American culture, Paint + Cloth is made from signature soft fabrics; items in this collection are constructed to feel like your favorite old vintage t-shirt.

Designed and based in Los Angeles and available at UNIQLO stores globally, Paint + Cloth is rooted in the art of laying ink on an amazing t-shirt.

Paint + Cloth will hit over 900 stores in Asia this month and 3 US stores Mid-June
