Though I read Accessory during the week that it was released in August, I am just writing my thoughts about now because I was so ambivalent of my thoughts and feelings about it. But, first things first.
If you are a fan of The Scarab Beetle Series and just want to know what to expect, the Description below sums up the book nicely.
If you just picked up the book, I recommend that you begin with Thief: The Scarab Beetle Series: #1. Accessory can be enjoyed as a standalone novel, but a reader just starting the series will be lost in the nuances of the characters.
If you don’t want spoilers, please stop here because there will be spoilers in this review.
HERE GOES…
What’s going on Kayli? #!&@ I was just so shocked with how everything went down. Except for the ending which truly was a revelation, the whole book is a comedy of errors which put the Academy boys in a bad light.
First – Why are the Academy boys treating Kayli as if she was their property or their slave? True, when Kayli and Brandon were kidnapped in the past book, it was a traumatic experience. But, instead of helping Kayli build up her self confidence again, the boys went overprotective and just let her veg in their apartment.
And it seems that the Academy boys were happy about that. As long as Kayli did not go anywhere without them, it was okay. So, is Kayli their property? Is Kayli their slave? They would not even allow her to get phone calls.
For this alone, I give the Scarab Beetle crew of the Academy a big fat ZERO. I will go negative if I could
Second – How gullible can this crew be? Just one look at Fortune and they let Kayli go. Goodness, its Raven and Marc, yet Fortune and Avery were able to separate Kayli from them in an instant. To think that the Scarab Beetle crew had held Kayli a virtual prisoner in their apartments for weeks.
Third – Kayli was given an opportunity to make a lot of money legitimately and all Raven can say is don’t do it? They are all poor. Kayli does not even have any spending money. The Academy boys will not allow her to get a real job. Now, that there is a real job offer to Kayli which can be very lucrative, all the boys were against it?
Oh, they can go all idealistic and say it is wrong. But, it will not solve their group’s cash flow problem. This crew is so nearsighted, I am not surprised that they Blake actually caught Kayli’s attention and held it.
I can go on and on ranting about the Academy boys. I really don’t like this crew very much. Oh, they are nice enough and from the description, very good looking. But, they are lame. I don’t see any spark among them in terms of leadership or any qualities that will push them forward.
Perhaps, C.L. Stone wanted them that way. After all, these boys are her creations. Is C.L. Stone building up Blake Coaltar? Are the boys just a foil to Blake Coaltar? In this book, Blake is the true hero, the one who pushed the storyline. The Academy boys were just supporting characters. Even Kayli for all intent and purposes was secondary to Blake Coaltar.
And here’s another surprise in this book. C.L Stone went where she had not brought any of her characters before in both the Academy series.
Accessory is Rated M for Mature due to violence and sexual content.
Kayli Winchester is still recovering from her last adventure and is out hunting for her missing brother, Wil, when Ethan Murdock calls, asking for help. Billions of dollars have gone missing and Kayli is the perfect person to find them – as one of the few people Ethan trusts.
Only one problem: The team is led by Blake Coaltar.
Kayli negotiates her way into a co-lead position, but for the Academy guys, that might not be good enough. The Academy doesn’t trust Blake and the last thing they want is for her to get mixed up with him.
The guys can’t persuade the willful Kayli to abandon the cause. They give her five days to convince them they should stay in this job. If she can’t, the boys want her to walk away.
Kayli goes undercover and becomes the hot topic around some of the most wealthy and powerful CEOs in Charleston. Now she has to prove she’s a secret investor for old Mr. Murdock from before he disappeared, and convince them all she’s the real deal. She dives into her assignment head-first, but one uncovered complication after another threatens the mission.
No matter how close to the chest Kayli plays her hand, secrets have a way of being discovered, and Axel, Corey, Brandon, Marc and Raven aren’t going to like the truth she’s keeping from them. Being forced to work together for a week with an enemy may tear them all apart, leaving Kayli with nothing.
It might be up to Blake Coaltar to save them from each other.
