Book Review: Almost a Bride by Patricia McLinn

Rating:

It’s Complicated
5 Stars

Matty Brennan and Dave Currick are childhood sweethearts. But as they entered early adulthood, they broke up though both of them blamed the other for breaking his/her heart. So, an early question in the story is “who was the heartbreaker?” which of course was answered by the end of the story.

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS***
The concept and/or the basis of the plot is what made “Almost a Bride” an outstanding romance novel. There really is no “bad guy” or “villain” in the story. In fact, the heroes are also the anti-heroes. That concept is hard to achieve in literary fiction. And it is harder to achieve in a romance novel because of the expected HEA. Hence, the author, Patricia McLinn had to put the angst on a romantic slant instead of the philosophical slant. In short, think of Hamlet’s soliloquy “to be or not to be” as a sonnet. Hard to imagine, right? Harder to write, if you ask me.

Great story, great editing and great concept. Five stars all the way.
