Book Review: The Cowboy and the Vampire – A Very Unusual Romance

Rating:

the cowboy and the vampireAuthors Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall probably have a dry wit that is laugh out loud funny! It’s a paranormal book and there is so much violence, making this book Rated M for Mature because of it. Still, Tucker, the hero of the story, and yes, he is “The Cowboy” in the title has me in stitches from beginning to end.

With pop culture’s preoccupation with the undead, it is hard to find a unique perspective that will draw the audience. Aside from competing with television and the movies, paranormal writers have to compete with the classics (Bram Stroker’s Dracula) and those who broke new grounds before them (Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire series).

Hence finding Tucker, a cowboy from LonePine, Wyoming taking on a very powerful and well-financed clan of vampires from New York City to save his true love Lizzie, who happens to hail from New York City herself is truly refreshing.

Who would have thought that LonePine, Wyoming, population 438 raised a vampire slayer? And of course, there is Rex, Tucker’s dog who is not just a pet in this story. He is a main character and a comic relief!

As the title said, this is an “unusual romance” and quite frankly, it’s very different from other romances that I have read. Nevertheless, it is still a romance and has a happy ending, except that it’s not the ending you expect!

A fun read! And, it’s also the beginning of a series, wherein you will be glad when you reach the end because Tucker and Lizzie, plus all the supporting characters are so lovable that you want to be part of their next adventure.

As I said earlier, The Cowboy and the Vampire: A Very Unusual Romance is Rated M for Mature due to violence. There are sex scenes, but the M rating is more due to violence. Nevertheless, you don’t want your 13-year old reading the sexy parts.
