Book Review: Dark Refuge (Spirit Wild Series)

Rating:

dark refuge by kate douglasFans of Kate Douglas already know that the Spirit Wild Series, wherein “Dark Refuge ” is the fourth book is about the Chanku, a race of shapeshifters. Then, it should be noted that “Dark Refuge” is the 16th book about the Chanku.

Now, if you’re wondering why I have to put it here, it’s because I’m a newbie when it comes to reading Kate Douglas. “Dark Refuge ” is the first book I’ve read from her. So, I really don’t have an idea about the Chanku. I don’t have any background story about them.

But, it did not deter me from enjoying the book! Emilene Cheval and Gabe Cheval (not blood relatives at all, they just share the same last name), who are the main characters were able to stand on their own story. And yes, there were many references to the Chanku, but explanations are segued in beautifully in conversations or in flashbacks.

In short, if you are a newbie like me, picking up Kate Douglas for the first time, you will not be cheated. In fact, you might like it enough to download the earlier books.

As you have already deduced, Emilene and Gabe have known each other since they were children. Though Emiline has had a huge crush on Gabe since she can remember, Gabe had always seen her as the pesky little sister of his friend Aaron.

They have not seen each other for almost a decade. When they met as adults, Emiline could not believe that her crush on Gabe had turned into a very adult attraction. To Gabe, he saw Emiline as a very desirable woman for the first time.

But, the mutual attraction was not enough. There was darkness in Emiline’s past and to reach their happily ever after, Emiline and Gabe have to face it head on or lose it all.

The premise of the story is not new – love conquers all. But, author Kate Douglas wrote in so many twists and turns, it actually became a paranormal thriller. And the subplot is as exciting as the main plot. Plus of course, there are new characters that were introduced, so you can look forward to another installment of the Chanku series.

This book is Rated M for Mature due to sexual content and violence.
