Book Review: Don’t Look Back by Michelle Cary

Rating:

Love and Redemption

A story of love and redemption, “Don’t Look Back” follows Cyndi Whitmore, a former hooker who found a way out by going to college. Currently, she holds a job as a school teacher in Stony Gap, Nevada and engaged to be married to Lance, the most eligble bachelor in their small town of 5,000.

But life has a way of turning things upside down. In a span of a few days, Cyndi was mugged, finds herself “un-engaged”, a murder suspect, then running for her life. In the midst of it all is Deputy Sheriff Braden Andrews whom Cyndi just find too attractive for her own comfort. She wants to trust him but scared that if she does, she will be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

A fast read wherein the author takes you into a thrilling ride from a small Nevada town to the neon lights of Las Vegas.

***MY TAKE ON THE STORY***
Though it follows the grand tradition of “Pretty Woman,” “Don’t Look Back” looks into the darker and sinister side of being a streetwalker. And while in “Pretty Woman” the protagonist is a modern day Cinderella, in “Don’t Look Back,” Cyndi Whitmore persevered to get out of the hole. And though she could never be a role model, Cyndi also inspires.

This book is definitely Rated M for Mature because of the graphic sex scenes. But, take that away (though the impact will be less), and “Don’t Look Back” tells the story of a brave young woman who against all odds overcame the obstacles thrown her way.
