With the new seasons of CSI and Criminal Minds on the minds of TV viewers, finding “I Hunt Killers ” by Barry Lyga proved to me once again that the scenarios created by my imagination from a book’s description is scarier and more sinister than something that I’m watching.
The story of Jasper (Jazz) Dent, the son of the infamous serial killer Billy Dent, “I Hunt Killers ” puts a new twist on the them, “it takes a thief to catch a thief.” Add the processing prowess of a crime scene by CSI, the profiling techniques of Criminal Minds and the ominous atmosphere of Dexter, what we have is “I Hunt Killers”.
And if you’re thinking that it is just an amalgamation of these things; that is not really the case. Told from the point of view of 17-year old Jasper Dent, teen angst is thrown in the mix, and thus creating a refreshing take on the crime/mystery/thriller genre.
Though the book is also filed under YA and Teen, I would classify “I Hunt Killers ” as Rated M for Mature due to violence.
What if the world’s worst serial killer…was your dad?
Jasper (Jazz) Dent is a likable teenager. A charmer, one might say.
But he’s also the son of the world’s most infamous serial killer, and for Dear Old Dad, Take Your Son to Work Day was year-round. Jazz has witnessed crime scenes the way cops wish they could–from the criminal’s point of view.
And now bodies are piling up in Lobo’s Nod.
In an effort to clear his name, Jazz joins the police in a hunt for a new serial killer. But Jazz has a secret–could he be more like his father than anyone knows?
