Book Review: Inn at Last Chance by Hope Ramsay

inn at last chanceA clever retelling of Jane Eyre with a paranormal twist in a South Carolina setting, “Inn at Last Chance” is a delightful read and reminds us why we love Southern belles.

At 36, Jenny Carpenter has decided to forgo marriage and be an innkeeper instead. Buying the Jonquil House from its absentee and unseen owner Gabriel Raintree did not prepare Jenny from finding him at her front door during an ice storm and demanding that she sell back the house to him.

A famous author of horror stories, Gabriel Raintree was suffering from a writer’s block and was hoping to find his muse and solitude in his hometown, Last Chance. He found his muse alright, but he was also finding himself attracted to Jenny. He also was finding out that many in Last Chance did not want him around and it was about something that happened when he was 10 years old.

Clever conversations among the characters and clever comebacks between the hero and the heroine, “Inn at Last Chance” is Hope Ramsay at her best. The vernacular is perfect; the description of Last Chance is on the mark that though it is a fictional place, it can be any small town in South Carolina.

Hope Ramsay also cleverly segued “Jane Eyre” into the story and made it part of the plot.

Inn at Last Chance” will be a great addition to your library and one of those books you will probably re-read.

This book is Rated PG 15 due to adult situations and an implied sex scene which is far from being graphic.
