Book Review: Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

Rating:

elantrisIn more ways than one, I am glad that Elantris is not the first book by Brandon Sanderson that I have read or he would have lost me as a fan. The magic system in Elantris might be interesting but the hero and heroine though fully developed are boring for fantasy characters.

In “Elantris,” Brandon Sanderson brings his readers to a world where magic is a way of life. The setting is Elantris, former capital of Arelon, which was once a powerful kingdom but declined in its influence when the magic of Elantrians faded.

The book follows Prince Raoden of Arelon and Princess Sarene of Teod whose arranged marriage was expected to benefit both their kingdoms to fight a common enemy.

But something happened to Raoden and Sarene has to use all her wits protect both their kingdoms and also find her “supposedly” dead husband.

And like almost all Brandon Sanderson books, there is a touch of a mystery/thriller. Elantris has that element too but the resolution was flat that in the end, I asked myself, “was that it?”

This book is rated PG 13 due to fantasy violence. There are no sex scenes in this book.
