“The Real Thing” is the second book by Tina Ann Forkner that I’ve read. And just like the first one, I cannot help but be drawn to Forkner’s lyrical prose. Each sentence is almost dreamy while each paragraph brings you to the next part of the dream.
The story of Manda Marshall, a new bride to champion saddle bronc cowboy Keith Black, who has two children from a former marriage, “The Real Thing” reflects the make-up of most families of today. One parent might not be biological, but the love shared is as strong as if they are.
Yet, like in real life, Manda and Keith’s two children have to undergo an adjustment period while on a parallel way, Manda and Keith who have been married before are also adjusting to their new status of being married again.
That situation is hard enough. Yet, life throws another curve ball to this already fragile family with Keith’s ex-wife making her presence known to the teenage daughter. And, though hell did not break loose, the Blacks found themselves in a heartbreaking family drama.
Poignant, even bittersweet, “The Real Thing” should be in your “To Be Read” list if you have not read it already. Make sure that Kleenex tissues are near because this romance drama will tug at your heartstrings from beginning to end. You will fall in love with the Blacks, guaranteed.
“The Real Thing” is Rated T for Teens. Parental guidance is strongly advised due to subject matter. There are no sex scenes in this book.
Sometimes you have to don a pair of cowgirl boots…
Manda Marshall is ready to leave heartache behind when she marries Keith Black, a champion saddle bronc cowboy and man of her dreams. But going from the serenity of small town Tennessee to the exhilaration of the rodeo, nothing can prepare her for being a cowboy’s wife. Becoming the new stepmom to Keith’s little boy and teenaged daughter has Manda relying on her deep sense of longing for a family and budding love for her stepchildren to strengthen their bond.
Manda’s desire of being a rodeo cowboy’s wife begins to take second place as she works to reinvent a life for herself and new family, but when mysterious phone calls from Keith’s missing ex-wife dredge up the past, Manda finds her marriage and family in an unusual and heart wrenching dilemma. The life she had worked so hard to build is suddenly redefined and her commitment to her husband and family is tested.
What Manda discovers has the power to heal or break her family in this emotional tale of cowboys, rodeo queens, and what it really means to ride beside a cowboy and his family, no matter the risk.
