Book Review: The Cowboy Wore Tartan by Diane Davis White

Four and Half Stars
4 Stars

The Highlands meets Texas in this lighthearted love story that focuses on Mactavish Macdonald and Vanessa Campbell.

Forced to join forces so that their businesses could remain profitable, Graham Macdonald of West Texas and Archie Campbel of Inverness Scotland connived to have their grandchildren Tav and Nessa get married, and use their nuptials as the cornerstone of an ad campaign that will benefit the merged company.

With Tav and Nessa very astute, they figured out what their grandfathers were up to. What they did not expect was the attraction they will have for each other.

***MY TAKE ON THE STORY WITH SPOILERS***
It is really an enjoyable read especially with the two grandfathers as a comic relief and of course, the proliferation of male characters who were introduced with the understanding that they will be the protagonists in the next books for “The Tartan Cowboy Series.”

Yet, even with the cameo appearances, all the characters added to the story, which really made it a lot of fun, though they are partly the reason why I took one half star off because their presence dragged the story a bit.

Tav and Nessa are lovable characters; their intelligence and wit were apparent from the very beginning. But, though they were fleshed out very nicely, there was something missing because of the introduction of their non-existent parents who died off-screen and thus, they were raised by their grandfathers. And this would have been okay except that somehow, their mention was just to explain and not for the readers to emphatize why they are willing to do everything they could to make their grandfathers happy including marrying someone for convenience.

The dramatic climax was also very short, and you would have missed it except that the last part of the book will focus on it. Yes, there is a rise in emotion but somehow you get the feeling that the author needed to wrap up this book nicely to excite the readers for the next book. This is another reason why I took off that half star.

Nevertheless, it is an enjoyable read!
