The 8th book in The Academy Ghost Bird series, “The Other Side of Envy” is arguably the most heart wrenching as Sang Sorensen is forced to face her past, examine the present and look into the future.
Forced to move out of her home at 16, Sang divides her time between her friends whom she fondly calls her Academy family – Owen, Sean, Kota, Victor, Silas, Nathan, Luke, North and Gabriel. But, events are catching up with them and the whole group is afraid that it is only a matter of time that school authorities will find out about Sang’s predicament.
Still, that is just one of Sang’s worries. As she gets deeper into The Academy secrets, a shocking revelation tests the bonds Sang and the boys have established. Most affected is Gabriel who has gone rogue and Sang has to find a way to make him come back.
And, if that was not enough, Sang also has to face new developments and challenges from her biological relatives which makes you wonder if blood is really thicker than water?
Though “The Other Side of Envy” is written to be a standalone book and can be read without any backgrounder, a reader who is picking up the series for the first time is advised to at least read the first book in the series, “Introductions: The Ghost Bird Series: #1” which is still currently free in Amazon. This will help in understanding the situation that Sang Sorensen and The Academy boys are in.
For fans of the series, be warned! Sang and Gabriel will tug at your heartstrings. Dr. Sean Green and Owen Blackbourne become more lovable while we get a better handle on the personalities of Kota, Victor, Silas, Nathan, Luke and North.
The pacing is fast and to use a saying, C. L. Stone threw a monkey wrench into an already complicated situation which will make you grab a Kleenex while you read.
“The Other Side of Envy” is Rated T for Teens. There are no sex scenes in this book.
Sang Sorenson dreams of what life might be like for her in the Academy, but joining isn’t as easy as simply writing an exam or passing an interview. She’ll need to pull the team together to get them on her side in order for it to work, which is harder than it sounds. The boys will do anything to protect her, which, for some, means keeping her out.
But that’s not all that’s going on in Sang’s complicated life. After a shocking revelation, Gabriel Coleman splinters himself off from everyone, avoiding not just his Academy team, but even going so far as to avoid Sang. Desperate to bring him back and get him on her side, Sang digs deep into his past to try to discover a way to reach out to him.
His truth is riddled with tragic events, but with the help of Kota, Victor, Silas, Nathan, Luke and North, she might be able to reach out to him before envy and despair drag him too far down to be saved.
