The first book in Elizabeth Hoyt’s bestselling Maiden Lane series, “Wicked Intentions ” is set in 1737 when George II was King and the Kingdom of Great Britain was barely 30 years old. And just to put things in perspective, the Industrial Revolution which began in 1760 was still unheard of and social reforms were still pipe dreams.
The first chapter establishes how poor the St. Giles district of London was. And this is where our heroine, Temperance Dews lives, where she and her brother run an orphanage on a string and a prayer.
On the verge of being evicted by the landlord for non-payment of rent, Temperance accepts an offer from Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire to help him find a savage killer in St. Giles. Though it was business arrangement in the beginning, both Caire and Temperance cannot deny the attraction they have for each other as they spend more time together.
After their first foray out looking for the killer, it became obvious that it was just a matter of when and not a matter of if, that they will consummate that attraction.
This book will appeal to the fans of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” but do not expect erotica level sex scenes. There are several steamy scenes of course, but nowhere near Fifty Shades. Nevertheless, it is still a very enjoyable read because the plot captivates you. Elizabeth Hoyt kept the suspense going until the end.
Now, just a point of reference, “Wicked Intentions ” was originally published in 2010 (just being re-issued as an ebook). Fifty Shades of Grey was first published in 2011. In short, Caire and Temperance stand on their own against Christian and Anastasia.
“Wicked Intentions: A Maiden Lane Novel” is Rated M for Mature due to violence and sexual content.
