Pineapple: Not Just for Eating

DALLAS, Jun 10, 2012/ — It was while living in Hawaii that I came to know that the pineapple is not just good to eat; it is also a good ornamental plant if you have the right variety.

Though the Hawaiian Islands were discovered by Captain Cook, it was John Kidwell who is credited in the introduction of the pineapple industry in Hawaii.

Large-scale pineapple cultivation began in the early 1900s on Hawaii; among the most famous and influential was James Dole who moved to Hawaii in 1899 and started a pineapple plantation in 1900. The Dole Company still has a big presence in Hawaii up to today.

Having lived in Honolulu for 3 years during my husband’s tour of duty with the U.S. Navy, visits to the Dole Plantation in Oahu introduced me to the ornamental varieties of pineapple.

So, when I saw ornamental pineapple plants on display at Northpark Center, I could not help myself but snap some photos. It brought back happy memories of our life in Hawaii.
