Planning Spring Break as an Adult

Spring break… the term evokes of beach parties and college kids, or the time when you were in college yourself. But you don’t need to be of college age to enjoy spring break.

Whether you’re an empty nester or already have spent your first decade out of college, spring break does not have to be a memory. You can make new memories beginning this spring.

The secret of planning a spring break as an adult is choosing a destination that is a little more off the beaten path. Consider a destination that proves to be a hidden gem for more mature crowds like Myrtle Beach, South Carolina or the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is perfect for an adult-oriented spring break because its shoulder season falls in March, April and May, as well as September and October. “Shoulder season” is the time of year that are adjacent to peak travel periods and have fewer crowds and enjoyable weather. So, if you are beach person and enjoys 70 degrees weather, then Myrtle Beach is for you!

If the beach is not what you’re looking for, head west for a nice dose of nature. Visiting the Grand Canyon in springtime is perfect. There are less crowds and it isn’t too hot in Arizona yet. Get some photos and do some hiking. And if you are ready to go back to good food and 5-star hotels, Las Vegas is just a few hours away.

Still, being away on spring break does not mean you have to miss your reading list. Since chances are you are bringing your much-loved and highly functional iPhone, even your trusty iPad, means that you have your e-book reader with you.

Here’s our recommendations: Run and Hide (An Eva Driscoll Thriller) by Alan McDermott, Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett and Trust Again by Mona Kasten.

Run and Hide by Alan McDermott

A mystery/thriller, Run and Hide follows Eva Driscoll, a CIA-trained woman used to chase down bad guys and not the other way around. But when her brother was killed in a faked suicide, Driscoll teams up with ex-soldier Rees Colback. Together they’re determined to uncover why members of his Special Forces squad are dying in mysterious circumstances but found themselves at the crosshairs of every agency in the country.

Fast-paced and easy to read, “Run and Hide” feeds your need for adrenaline. It is hard to put down once you started. Lots of plot twists and unexpected turns. Eva Driscoll can give Jack Reacher a run for his money.

Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett

For sci-fi/fantasy fans, Robert Jackson Bennett is a rising star in world building and magic systems. Set in a city that runs on industrialized magic, “Foundryside” follows Sancia Grado, a young thief whose latest target is a heavily guarded warehouse.

Her unique abilities make her successful, but what she did not bargain for was the item she stole, an artifact of unimaginable power, an object that could revolutionize the magical technology known as scriving.

In the words of my favorite sci-fi/fantasy author Brandon Sanderson, [Foundryside] is “the exciting beginning of a promising new epic fantasy series. Prepare for ancient mysteries, innovative magic, and heart-pounding heists.”

Trust Again by Mona Kasten

For the romance genre lovers, “Trust Again” by Mona Kasten follows Dawn and Spencer, two broken-hearted souls trying to break free from their pasts, but it won’t allow them. As they struggle to learn to love themselves, one side effect is that they learn to trust again which in turn slowly paved the way for a happily ever after. Dawn and Spencer tug at your heartstrings and you cannot help but cheer for them.
